Dr. Robert Redfield is the former director of the CDC. After completing fellowships in infectious diseases and tropical medicine post-medical school, Dr. Redfield served as a U.S. Army physician and medical researcher, contributing to early HIV/AIDS research. He later went on to co-found the Institute of Human Virology along with two HIV research colleagues, and is credited for expanding our understanding of how HIV/AIDS is transmitted and treated. He also developed the Walter Reed staging system for HIV infection still used today. As director of the CDC, Dr. Redfield focused on, among other important causes, managing the opioid epidemic, and in 2020, led the CDC in its efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
